Bev Hackbart Scholarship

In keeping with our club’s mission to “provide resources and to … empower women and improve their status,” this $1000 scholarship awarded annually assists in the education of a single parent enrolled at the University of Colorado. Funds will be earmarked for tuition, books, and other college-related expenses.

About Bev Hackbart

Bev Hackbart was a long-standing member of the Zonta Foothills Club, who was dedicated to our mission of ensuring that all women have access to health care, live a life free from violence, and reach their potential through education. Bev passed away too young - but before she did, Bev shared her talents and business acumen to benefit women less fortunate than herself.

In honor of Bev Hackbart’s work to improve the status of women in the work place, our club has established a scholarship to be awarded in Bev’s honor. Zonta Foothills Club supports this scholarship, managed by the University of Colorado Foundation, as a way of continuing Bev’s work and vision in investing in the betterment of women and girls so we all can live to our full potential.

Those sharing this vision have been contributing to an endowment that enables the scholarship to be made. The initial fund raising goal was achieved, and enabled the first $1000 scholarship to be awarded in the Fall of 2008 to a deserving individual. Our goal is to continue to build this endowment so more than one scholarship can be made each year.

After laying the critical groundwork, the first Bev Hackbart Scholarship was awarded to Vanessa Frambes, a full time student and working mother (three jobs, in fact). She is working toward a degree in International Relations and is also studying secondary education because she hopes to become a high school social studies teacher after graduation.

Eligibility

An individual is eligible for the scholarship if she or he is a University of Colorado student who:

  • is a single parent who is a Colorado resident with certified financial need
  • is enrolled in a certificate or degree program with a declared major & at least a sophomore standing
  • has a GPA of 2.5 or higher and carries a course load of 12 hours or more.

The Role of the Univeristy of Colorado Foundation

The University of Colorado Foundation works with donors to establish scholarship funds in accordance with donor wishes. The Foundation and the CU Student Financial Aid Office will manage all of the advertising & student selection. This provides Zonta with a standardized, efficient & effective means of managing the award process. We also gain professional, institutional management of the invested funds
