President’s Monthly Letter-

In the summer I was a wild child in the woods, with no shoes, and in the fall it was back to the city, shoe shops and school.
— Margaret Atwood

I’m Holding on to Summer

Whether you are still “barefoot in the woods” or heading “back to the city, shoe shops and school”, you are hopefully enjoying time with family, friends and nature. We still have a bit more time and hopefully sunny (but cool) days to enjoy.

Even through the summer days, our committees have been hard at work! Thank you everyone for your commitment to our club and especially to our committee chairs who have been strategically planning for next year, helping us build our budget and our calendar. We will be presenting the rough draft of our 2023-24 budgets for both the club and the foundation in a few weeks and we hope that you will take a peek and bring any questions or concerns to our membership-wide budget review sessions which will be held via zoom at NOON on Tuesday, August 15th and at 5:30 on Thursday, August 17th. See Zoom link below. Then on August 21st, you will receive the final budget draft for a membership vote. Thanks ahead of time for emailing us your “yeah” or “nay” as soon as possible. Our vote help us jump start the new fiscal year!

As you can see from the pictures below, there were great ideas brewing at the productive and FUN retreat that we held in June and these ideas and recommendations have been a strong foundation for the committee planning that has been going on for the past month. Check out our Retreat recap below.

Hope to see you all at our Lake-side Summer Social on July 27th!!!

— Pam

FLASH NEWS

Retreat Fun and SO Productive.

Great ideas and lots of sharing. Here is a Retreat Summary with the ideas that you all compiled in your small groups and through our summary discussions.

In the meantime, here are the top line take aways from our meeting:

Food options at business meetings: Catered (including delivery and set up) Bring your own, or no food. In the past price is not always a good deal.

Meeting Location: Church is good, try another year? Purchase a new projector that is compatible with any computer and more current for ease of hook up.

Meeting Time/Day: Prefer a set schedule (same time and day each month), Keep in the evening, better for those working.

Meeting Feel: Friendly and welcoming. Membership needs to have a greeter at door each month to welcome everyone. Designated social time at meetings (shorter agenda not just meeting stuff).

Annual Calendar: OK as is.

Speakers: Have a speaker quarterly on a topic that is related to our mission.

Educatez Scholarship Committee

Meet Our 2023 Jane M. Klausman Women in Business Scholarship Recipient

The Scholarship Committee is very excited to announce that we have selected our 2023 Jane M. Klausman Women in Business Scholarship recipient!

This year, we received nearly 50 applications for the JMK scholarship after we reached out to the CU Boulder School of Business. The committee had its work cut out for them! It was a lot of work to review so many applications and compile our scores, but our top choices were clear!

Meet Our JMK Winner:

Lauren Hanley

Lauren will receive our club’s $2,000 award and go on to compete with other club winners at the District 12 level where, if selected, she will receive another $1,000, plus be considered for the Zonta International winner and receive an additional $5,000! This means a potential total award of $8,000!

Lauren Hanley is a recent CU Boulder graduate with a degree in International Affairs and a minor in Leadership Studies. She is excited to pursue her master’s in Business Analytics with a Marketing and Advertising specialization at the Leeds School of Business this fall. During her undergraduate studies, Lauren interned at several nonprofits, including Make-A-Wish and the United Nations Association of Boulder, where she focused on advocacy work for women and children, and worked on a successful Cities for CEDAW (Committee for the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women) campaign, encouraging the cities of Erie and Lafayette to lend their support.

And More Good News…

As you all know, we had funds remaining at the end of the 22-23 fiscal year, so at our retreat we voted to award two additional scholarships.

Meet our Second and Third Place Winners!

Our second place winner is Trisha Tyagi, a rising junior at CU Boulder who plans to pursue her MBA and work in the private equity sector. This is a field with very few female players, and Trisha had the privilege of interning at the Riverside Company in San Francisco (as the only female in attendance), following her participation in the Girls Who Invest Summer Intensive Program at the Wharton School of Business. In addition, she is President of the Leeds Student Government (LSG) at the Leeds School of Business. Trisha will receive a $2,000 award from our club.

Our third place award winner, Erin Johnson, will receive a $900 scholarship. Erin is an MBA candidate at the University of Colorado Boulder. She is also a Graduate Intern at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) where she specializes in international clean energy transitions under the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and NREL partnership, and leads the Women in Power System Transformation (PST) internship program to expand leadership opportunities for women in power system operations.

Erin’s long-term career ambition is to emerge as a leader in the renewable energy industry who champions equitable renewable energy solutions across the globe.

As you can see, all three of these women are incredibly intelligent and ambitious trailblazers in the business world, and they understand the importance of increasing the representation of women in impactful roles. We could not be more proud, and we look forward to inviting them to a future business meeting. Thank you to the selection committee, Catherine Médal, Collen Farrell, Kathy Israelson, Michelle Médal, Kim Prosser-Noonan, and our incoming EducateZ Scholarships Chair, Nancy Rowe for all their hard work reading the applications and then working through this competitive selection process!

YWPA Winner Update

In other scholarship news, we finally heard from District 12 that our YWPA winner Julia Hunt was not selected as the District winner. Nevertheless, we are extremely proud of her, and our award check is in the mail to Columbia University, where she will start classes in the fall.

Next on deck – our new Bev Sears Climate Action scholarship, which will be rolled out in early fall!

Service Committee

Welcome Cheri, Our New Service Co-chair

Thank you to Cheri Magin, for formally joining our club! Cheri has been a member of the Zonta Club in Rochester NY for many years and is even their Club’s Past President. (Here she is on the far right, at a recent District 4 Conference.) Cheri has been traveling back and forth for the past few years and is now settled into her Colorado home. We are lucky to have her diving in as co-chair our Service Committee with Marta Lindrose.

Service Projects Planned

The Service Committee is excited take on our Zonta library project and working to expand our relationships with our library partners at EFAA, Community Foodshare, Sister Carmen and the Our Center.

In addition to the libraries, the Service Committee is listening to survey and retreat feedback and will be identifying one or two other projects a quarter to provide members with hands on opportunities for community outreach. We will for sure be joining forces with Share-a Gift. Some activities like that holiday event will be with our Z Clubs and some will be just with our club. If you have any ideas let the committee members know.

Service Committee - Co-chairs Marta Lindrose and Cheri Magin, Kim Prosser-Noonan, Joan Siebenaler, Catherine Bailey

Membership Committee

Building Our Club Through Outreach

Membership is ready for another exciting year of welcoming new members to our club.  To get the ball rolling there Marta Lindrose will host Zappy Hour on

Thursday, September 21.  Please plan to attend and bring guests. Having our members there is a great way to inspire new members to join!

Kay Myer, Colleen Farrell and Catherine Medal will be updating our club profile book. It is fun to read about our fellow members, their families and interests and it gives us a sense of belonging to a group of friends we care about. And a new club directory is coming as soon as we get photos of some new members.  If there are errors with your entry, please let Ann Hodgson know.

Finally, we are in the process of finding a source to make new member name badges.  You will be contacted to submit the information you want to appear when we are ready to order.

Zonta EducateZ Committee

Meet our New Z Club Intern Audrey Bahintchi

We are excited to announce that we will have a new Z and Golden Z Club Intern for the 2023-24 academic year. Audrey Bahintchi will take over the reigns from our intern legends Claudia Ibarra and Gaby Lopez who will still remain active and will be helping Audrey learn the ropes (thank goodness).

Audrey is a rising junior at CU Boulder maintaining a 4.0 average and is majoring in psychology. She was a member of the Pantherz Z Club while at Boulder High School and Club Vice President during our challenging COVID years. Despite virtual connections only, she worked hard to keep the club focused, helping to coordinate our COVID Education Project and running virtual meetings. Since then she has served as an Advisory Board member for our Flatirons Golden Z Club. So she brings a wealth of experience.

Audrey is a first-generation college student,  immigrating to the U.S. from Ivory Coast, Africa at age 8 with her single mother. Although her English is flawless, French is her first language and she speaks a local Ivory Coast dialect as well. She explains that “My bicultural roots have given me the tools to hear all perspectives, appreciate the differences and the commonalities of my community, and in turn, through my work with Zonta I have tried to unify students and create a platform for those whose voices are not heard.”

She is eager to jump in to fill the very BIG shoes of Gaby and Claudia and we are so excited to have her!

The Advocacy Committee

Welcome New Members!

We are so excited to have you join us and learn about the important work that Zonta is doing in Boulder County, in Colorado, around the USA and around the world!

The Committee met recently to draft our 23/24 work plan. You can read that plan here.

Ending Child Marriage

Two states, Michigan and Connecticut, have recently passed legislation to end Child Marriage. This is a priority for Zonta International and for the USA Caucus. Nearly 300,000 minors, the majority of them girls, were legally married in the US between 2000 and

2018. Child Marriage is defined as any marriage where at least one person is under age 18. It was legal in all 50 states until 2018. Since then, 10 states have passed bans to end the practice. Although Colorado passed a law in 2019, it allows someone under 18 to marry with judicial approval. Those who advocate against child marriage, like Unchained At Last, do not believe this is sufficient.

Visit the Zonta USA Caucus web page to video this informational video.

Zonta USA Causus!

Here is a link to the Zonta USA Caucus website if you haven’t visited the site yet.

The Caucus is comprised of a Delegate and Alternate  from each District that has Clubs in the US. It is an Advocacy focused group and has several committees that work various issues. One of the most important things the Caucus does are the Fast Action Fridays that come out usually biweekly during our meeting season (excludes summer). This is how we leverage the voices of the nearly 7000 US based Zonta members.

Rannell Randles, Advocacy Chair and USA Caucus Representative for D12 would be happy to connect with you to tell you more about the Caucus. Just let her know if you want a chat.

You will see on the ZI website you can sign up for email or text alerts to participate. We will remind you in the fall to be sure we are all signed up. For email alerts here.

100 Years of the ERA!

The ERA has met all the requirements for ratification. Join us in calling for the 28th Amendment to be formally published as part the Constitution.
