President’s Monthly Letter

“I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.”

Mother Teresa

What an amazing month.

So many highlights to report, but the best of all is that our Foothills Club JMK winner has been named the D12 and Zonta International winner. What an honor for Lauren Hanley and our club! A big thank you to our Scholarship Committee for all of their hard work sifting through over 60 applications…it paid off! You selected a powerful young women who will now receive a total of $8000 in financial support from our club, D12 and Zonta International, wonderful support as she continues her MBA at the Leeds School of Business at CU.

But this is just a small peek at what’s gone on this month! We have all been hard at work commemorating Domestic Violence Awareness Month by joining forces with community partners, using our voice through local advocacy. Our Beth Haynes Award presentation was an inspiration and it was an honor to have so many Zontians attend in support of our domestic violence prevention community. Thank you to Sheila King for her powerful Guest Opinion in the Daily Camera on October 20 entitled “This month, raise awareness to prevent domestic violence.”

And there is lots of other work going on behind the scenes. We are planning for our all-important fund raising through Colorado Gives and Zing for Zonta, our Z Clubs are growing and they are learning how to have an impact on their community through service and advocacy and our scholarships are ramping up. The Service Committee is growing our library program too. Catherine Bailey recently set up an arrangement with the Bookworm in Boulder to give us all of their extra childrens, teens and adult books. And the book team is back in business, delivering books to our food banks all around the county. Such great work that has an important impact on helping to improve family literacy.

So much work is underway but the teamwork and friendships that are percolating beneath all of these accomplishments is inspiring. We are getting stronger and stronger together and we are having a great time doing it and we are feeling great joy as we support women in our community. For years the Zonta Foothills Club of Boulder County has perhaps, been one of Boulder’s best kept secrets…now word is getting out…And we will celebrate the impact at our upcoming business meeting when we will induct a new group of members.

Thanks for all you do for Zonta, for women in our community and for one another.

— Pam

FLASH NEWS

Zonta says no for Domestic Violence awareness month

Beth Haynes Winner Honored

Our club members were honored to join our criminal justice community to award Boulder Sheriff Detective Mike McKinley the 2023 Beth Haynes Memorial Award. McKinley was recognized for his work investigating and arresting former Hygiene Fire Department captain Kamron Barnaby, who is accused of sexually assaulting a number of women in the department. He is recognized for gaining victims’ trust to get evidence needed to make the arrest.

When receiving the award, Detective McKinley said “To be recognized in her (Beth Haynes) name … it’s really hard to put into words. I’m very grateful and humbled to be recognized this year.” DA Michael Dougherty also spoke, recognizing McKinley and emphasizing the importance of this DVART team which works tirelessly even in the face of inceased Boulder County DV cases.

A new addition to this year’s ceremony was the Beth Haynes Golden Shield Award given to three Boulder officers who bravely handled a DV case taking direct fire from the perpetrator and were honored for saving the life of the victim.

Finally, Special Recognition Awards were given to a number of community advocates and volunteers, including Soledad Diaz who, while working with our partners at SPAN (Safehouse Progressive Alliance for Nonviolence) built a strong partnership with the DVARTS team.

Congratulations all and thank you for Building a Better World for victims in our community.

At our October meeting, Gaby Lopez passed the rock to our newest member, Claudia Ibarra, who has been a steadfast mentor to our Z Clubs for the past few years. We are so proud of all that she brings to our club and to the future Zontians who she inspires. You Rock Claudia!

Membership Committee

Membership News

By now you have received the survey from Kay Meyer who is updating our Foothills Member Booklet. Please complete the questions and send it back to Kay as soon as possible.

The Membership Committee will be hosting a training for members who would like be mentors for our new members. Sometime after the first of the year, we will meet with new members and their mentors to review our “New Member Booklet”, highlight our club and our activities.

Finally, its name tag time! Colleen Farrell has been reaching out to members to confirm how they want their name to appear on our new club badges. If you haven’t heard from Colleen give her a call or drop her an email to let her know your preferences.

Zervice Committee

BOOKS, BOOKS, BOOKS!

Our Zonta Book drive, the first Zervice Committee project of the year, is still going strong. Please continue to ask everyone for new or gently used children's books, teen books and adult books for our libraries at Emergency Family Assistance Association (EFAA), Community Food Share (CFS), Sister Carmen, and the

Our Center (which only needs adult books). A BIG thank you to the Z Club for conducting their own book drive in Boulder High School! The bins are filling up.

Great news! Catherine Bailey has worked out an agreement with The Bookworm in Boulder. They are calling her every 2 weeks to pick up children’s,teens, and adult books - many are almost like new! October’s collection from the store is 160 kids books and 37 adult books with more on the way. Finally, similar to the arrangement we have with Anthem in Broomfield we are hoping to have an arrangement with Balfour Senior Living in Longmont for book donations. They are advertising for us on their internal TV network; we expect this will be a good source for adult books.

As a note of interest, last Wednesday when we were at the Justice Center, for the Beth Haynes award, we confirmed that our library is still in the entrance of one of the courtrooms for family and custody trials. While it has the old signage, it is still going strong. We started this library over 8 years ago to give the children something to read while they waited for their parents going to court. We will be updating the signs and refreshing the books soon.

The FUNdraising Committee

Start Thinking Colorado Gives Day - December 5, 2023

Thank you to our Board for writing over 65 thank you notes which together with our 202-23 Annual Report will be sent to our donors.

From where ever they are in the world, your friends and family can donate on Colorado Gives Day and fund the Zonta Foothills Foundation's mission to Build a Better World For Women and Girls. CGS is a perfect option for those who live too far to buy a Zing ticket. Ask your friends to include us on their giving list!

Never Too Early to Start Planning

…and speaking of Zing. The FUNdraising Committee has distriuted our Zing promotional materials and access to the Google Sponsorship spreadsheet to the

membership. They are asking that everyone pick a few business names to contact or add names. Many donors require a 5-6 month lead time so we need to get on it. But it isn’t hard; many requests can be done ON LINE! Please help. The list will be circulated at our November meeting. Remember…

  • We have contracted with Front Range Catering.

  • Erica Sodos has agreed to be our emcee again.

  • Emails have been sent to 3 possible judges, we will update everyone when we have heard back from the candidates.

  • This year we will have two prizes: a Judges Choice Prize and an Audience Choice Prize - each one winner will receive $500!

  • We are looking into software packages to help with Check In, Silent Auction, Audience Voting and Check Out. We want an enjoyable and smooth experience for our guests.

The fundraising process includes everyone because this is how we raise funds to maintain our scholarships and programs. We need you to help us find Zing sponsors, donors & TALENT because we all want to Build A Better World For Women and Girls through our scholarships, service and advocacy.
