President’s Monthly Letter-

You’re off to great places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting, So get on your way!
— Dr. Seuss

We are on our way…

Wow, this is probably the most comprehensive Flash edition ever. Sit down and take your time to read through it from beginning to end. We are all climbing our mountain together and today is our day.

Thanks to each and every one of you; all of the team work from our summer planning and action is paying off and we are on our way to an amazing year. Thank you to everyone for helping us to finalize one of the most empowering budgets that our Zonta Foothills Foundation has ever had. From the Club Committees, to the Finance Committee (with old and new Treasuers), to each individual member, we have created and approved a budget that will both empower and inspire us to support women and girls both locally and around the world!

Now we look ahead to building on this momentum. As you read you will see how much great work is underway. From scholarships to Z Clubs to service and advocacy activities we are helping women all around our community and are making a difference. The great news is that our Boulder friends and neighbors are taking notice and we have a number of potential members who will be joining us for meetings and activities in the next few weeks. We are growing! I hope you will share the excitement. Invite friends to Zappy Hour or our many fall events. There is alot going on and its inspiring. Everyone can play a role if they would like to.

Here’s to our 2023-24 year…we are off to an amazing start.

— Pam

District 12 Conference

The 66th District 12 Conference: ASCENDING NEW HEIGHTS

The D 12 conference is this coming weekend. If you are interested in going please let Pam know. We would love to all go together. Let’s have a great Zonta Foothills Club turnout! September 15-17, 2023 Fort Collins, CO

Dr. Amy Bonomi to Discuss Her New Book

Co-authored with David Martin, Recantation and Domestic Violence: The Untold Story was writtern to empower people and communities to improve their understanding of and skills in addressing domestic violence cases that involve recantation. The book illustrates the precise interpersonal dynamics of recantation in criminal cases in which felony-level abuse has occurred.

Using her five-stage model developed through listening to hundreds of hours of jail calls between abusers and their victims, Dr. Bonomi will illuminate the subtleties of how abusers tamper with and manipulate their victims to recant. Dr. Bonomi will put the audience directly in touch with what abusers say, how they say it, and how victims respond.

Amy Bonomi, Ph.D., M.P.H. is Professor and Associate Dean of Strategic Initiatives in the College of Health and Human Services at Northern Arizona University, founder of Social Justice Associates, and consultant for the U.S. Department of Justice. An award-winning professor at The Ohio State University, Amy and her team published the five-stage model of how domestic abusers tamper with and coerce victims to recant.

Service Projects Planned

News Flash!!! After 3 years of Covid restrictions the Zonta Foothills Lending Library is back in business at Sister Carmen in Lafayette!!! They are now supplied with Childrens’, Teen and Adult books. Here is Cheri Magin, Service co-chair getting things all set up.

Our first Zervice Committee project has begun and we are asking everyone in the club to help by sending out messages to everyone they know to ask them for new or gently used Children's Books for our Libraries at Emergency Family Assistance Association (EFAA),

Community Foodshare (CFS), Sister Carmen, and the Our Center in Longmont - they only need adult books. A separate email went out to the membership with a sample script of what we need and how to ask. Once we restock we will ask for volunteers to make book deliveries once or twice a month to our libraries. More to follow.

Based on club and Z Club input The Zervice Committee decided that as a club, we will work together with the Z and Golden Z Clubs on Service Projects like the Zonta Silhouettes at Front Range Community College (FRCC) on September 25th, the book gift wrapping at CFS and Share-A-Gift in December. More service project information will be available as soon as the Z Club finalizes their schedule.

Z Club Hits the Ground Running!

The Z Club had their first meeting on August 29th, with over 20 students attending and we haven’t even started recruiting. At their September 5th meeting they begin creating signs to post around Boulder High to promote the Z Club.

BHS hosts a student club fair on September 13 where we will have a table and our members will be there introduce themselves to the students. So next week, members will be finalizing their signs and banners, and preparing for the new member ice cream social on September 19th. In addition to recruitment, the club is starting to get involved with advocacy. They are signing up for Fast Action Fridays and learning about ways to support the Zonta USA Caucus.

Finally, they are taking to social media. Check out the video our new officers made for Panther TV. Its great fun! They have posted it on their Instagram page along with this flier which is hanging around the school.

It's been a busy fall so far but also exciting to see so much enthusiasm for the Z Club. This is shaping up to be another record year.

Zonta International Strategic Plan Presentation and Recordings

Recently, Zonta International hosted two sessions introducing Zonta International’s new strategic plan - Zonta, Gender Equity, and a Vision for 2030 & Beyond.

If you were able to attend live, we hope you enjoyed the presentation. If you were not able to join us, or if you want to go back to any of the information that was presented, you can find the presentation and recordings of both sessions on the Zonta International website HERE.

There will be additional opportunities to discuss the strategic plan and ask questions at the upcoming district conferences.

Ending Child Marriage

Katherine Cleland, member of the USA Caucus and and active member of the End Child Marriage Coalition has informed us that Colorado is one of the States the Coalition plans to target for an updated law in the coming year.

She is seeking Colorado Zontians who would like to build a state coalition and help lead this effort. There are many resources and lessons learned that will help inform this work. You may be aware that several years ago,  Colorado did pass Child Marriage legislation, but the End Child Marriage advocates do not consider it a good bill, because it allows exceptions for children under 18 to be married. The goal is a no exceptions bill. Please let Pam or I know if you are interested in being part of this work. For text alerts here

Request to Help Afghan Women in Our Communities

This fall a group of ten Afghan women who resettled in Boulder County, will continue taking ESL (English as Second Language) classes.  They meet on Monday and Wednesday mornings from 9:20-11:30 at

Grace Commons Church in the heart of Boulder. We need transportation help for two of the women. One woman lives in Lafayette (Aziza has two children going with her) and one lives at Baseline & 39th Street in Boulder (Maryam will have a 1 1/2 year old with her). The women really enjoy attending, learning a new language and culture as well as having time together.  It is exciting to watch them blossom as they learn a new language and gain self-confidence.

Zonta members Elizabeth Freedman, Sara Gillespie, Sheila Cohen and Ann Hodgson have volunteered to join other community members in driving the women to and from class when available. Additional drivers are needed! Car seats & instructions on how to place them are provided. Please consider volunteering to help these refugee women in our communities. If you’d like to participate, please contact Elizabeth Freedman at  freed007@comcast.net or 303-888-2850 for more information.

A Message From President Ute Scholz

Zonta Says Now…We all Need to Take Action: “The climate crisis is a fossil fuel crisis…”

A Message from Ute Scholz…

Climate change is one of the most imminent issues facing the world today. Its effects negatively impact all living beings on our planet now and for generations to come. However, it is important to acknowledge that these consequences disproportionately affect women and girls. Due to systematic gender inequality, women and girls have fewer resources and choices than men, and with each climate change disaster, the situation worsens. This needs to change, which is why Zonta Says NOW to Gender-Equal Climate Action. Both collectively and as individuals, we need to say NOW to:

  • Increasing climate change awareness and its gender-related consequences.

  • Including gendered climate change advocacy actions in our advocacy plans.

  • Supporting the inclusion of women at the national and local tables of decision-makers on environmental sustainability.

  • Promoting girls’ education, the inclusion of climate literacy in schools, and girls’ participation in STEM studies to increase gendered scientific and technical contributions to climate change mitigation.

  • Advocating for national policies that consider women’s economic opportunities and ensure their full and equal participation in the economy.

As you read ahead about Zonta's commitment to achieving gender equality through climate action, I encourage you to consider how you, as an individual, can contribute to these efforts. Your own actions and voice matter! Please keep an eye out for a survey coming to your inbox by the end of this week. I encourage you all to respond so that we can continue to say NOW to a better world for women and girls.
